ABOUT ME:   (Here’s an older Sample Visual Resume.)  After years in journalism, strategic communication, and  “green” marketing for national and global organizations, I now study, teach, and consult in the areas of public relations and advertising.

On the academic side, I have taught at the University of Washington, Bridgewater State University,  Presidio Graduate School, and California State University, East Bay. I’m also now at California State University, Fresno‘s Media, Communication, and Journalism departmentGo, Bulldogs!

I came to academia in 2004 after first writing for newspapers (such as the San Francisco Chronicle) and numerous magazines and books.  I have also worked in marketing, advertising, and community development for nonprofits, governmental agencies, and global business clients, ranging from the International Red Cross to Taco Bell. My undergraduate degree in Communications (Journalism emphasis) was at California State University, Fullerton; I received a M.A. in English (Native American literature) from California State University, Sacramento, and I completed my Ph.D. work at the University of Washington in 2007.  My dissertation focused on strategic communication, news flows,  and international development, focusing on the Millenium Development Goals and groups such as PATH, World Vision, governments, and global citizens.  I also received certificates in International Development and Women’s’ Studies.

My current research agenda includes activist public relations strategies about equity, education, health, and the environment, especially as they relate to women and indigenous populations.  Current memberships include:

  • American Marketing Association:  The largest marketing association in North America, AMA is a professional association for individuals and organizations involved in the practice, teaching and study of marketing worldwide.
  • American Society for Public Administration:  The leading interdisciplinary public service organization representing all forums in the public service arena.
  • Public Administration Theory Network:  An international network of professionals concerned with the advancement of public administration theory.
  • Public Relations Society of America – The Public Relations Society of America, based in New York City, is the world’s largest organization for public relations professionals.
  • International Communication Association (ICA) – ICA is an academic association for scholars interested in the study, teaching and application of all aspects of human and mediated communication.
  • National Communication Association – NCA is a scholarly society that works to enhance the research, teaching, and service produced by its members on topics of both intellectual and social significance.

My mission is to help individuals and groups with strategies to successfully communicate with their audiences, especially in regards to sustainability and development.   I also love to explore long-distance forms of education, including Prezi , Dipity, and VoiceThread.
