ABOUT ME:   (Here’s an older Sample Visual Resume.)  After over 30 years in journalism, strategic communication, and  “green” marketing for national and global organizations, I now study, teach, and consult in the areas of mediated communication, sustainability, and information and technology (including social media use by public and activist groups). I am also a founding partner of Global Spark, a nonprofit organization that focuses on issues of equity, education, and the environment.

On the academic side, I have taught at the University of Washington, Bridgewater State University, and Presidio Graduate School. I’m now at California State University East Bay — Go, Pioneers!

I came to academia in 2004 after first writing about sustainability and health for newspapers such as the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as numerous magazines and books.  I have also worked in marketing, advertising, and community development for nonprofits, governmental agencies, and global business clients, ranging from the International Red Cross to Taco Bell. My undergraduate degree in Communications (Journalism emphasis) was at California State University, Fullerton; I received a M.A. in English (Native American literature) from California State University, Sacramento, and I completed my Ph.D. work at the University of Washington in 2007.  My dissertation focused on strategic communication, news flows  and international development, focusing on the Millenium Development Goals and groups such as PATH, World Vision, governments, and global citizens.  I also received certificates in International Development and Womens’ Studies.

My current research agenda includes issues of equity, education, and the environment, especially as they relate to women and indigenous populations.  Current memberships include:

  • American Marketing Association:  The largest marketing association in North America, AMA is a professional association for individuals and organizations involved in the practice, teaching and study of marketing worldwide.
  • American Society for Public Administration:  The leading interdisciplinary public service organization representing all forums in the public service arena.

My mission is to assist individuals and groups with strategies to successfully communicate with their audiences, especially in regards to sustainability and development.   I also love to explore long-distance forms of education, including Prezi , Dipity, and VoiceThread.
